Top 3 Reasons Pregnant Patients Benefit from Chiropractic Care
Lately, there has been a notable increase in women who have decided to see a chiropractor throughout their pregnancy. There are a number of reasons that a newly pregnant mother would seek out chiropractic care but three common issues stand out; breech position, the potential for long or excruciating labors, and painful recovery after delivery. Chiropractic care has produced incredible results in addressing these issues and is truly beneficial to both mom and the new baby. All three of these issues have a very important singular underlying contributor; restriction and asymmetry in the pelvis. This underlying issue is not always immediately apparent, but it has a broad effect on a pregnant woman’s body.
1. Intrauterine Constraint
The uterus is suspended within the pelvis by several ligaments and muscles that attach directly to the bones of the pelvis. If the pelvis becomes restricted and the movement becomes reduced or asymmetrical, those ligaments and muscles will tighten and cause twisting or torsion of the uterus. This extra tension pulling the uterus while a baby is developing inside greatly reduces the space needed for movement, which is especially important when the baby needs to turn head-down to prepare for the birth process. This intrauterine constraint has been cited as a major contributor to having a breech positioned baby and the Webster Chiropractic Technique has been very successful at reducing that constraint. The Webster Technique allows the baby to turn head-down on her/his own resolving this breech position.
2. Long, Excruciating or Exhausting Birth Processes
The birth process is known to be a very intense, painful, stressful, and sometimes scary event that no man can ever comprehend. However, the intensity of birth can have advantages for both mother and baby as it strengthens their bond in the first crucial moments of life. As rewarding as the birth process can be, sometimes the pain and length seem to be a little too much, as if it is not supposed to be this way. Well, maybe it’s not. When a woman becomes pregnant, her body is flooded with a hormone called relaxin which does exactly what you might think, it relaxes the ligaments and joints in her body for the purpose of giving birth. This joint laxity allows the pelvis to open up so the baby can make her/his way through the birth canal. Now, think about how a restricted, asymmetrical pelvis would affect this process; a pelvis that is supposed to open up is now not moving to open up at all, or if it is, not evenly. This restriction is a major contributor to those extremely long labors that can end up in emergency C-sections because the mom or baby gets tired or the baby gets stuck in the birth canal. This process is meant to be intense but making sure that the pelvis is moving properly and symmetrically by seeing a prenatal focused chiropractor has been shown to reduce labor times, reduce pain, and reduce medical interventions such as Caesarean sections and episiotomies during delivery.
3. Long, Painful Recovery Time
Let’s say that you have just given birth to a precious baby but your pelvis was restricted, that probably means that you didn’t have the easiest time during the birth process. Maybe you were there for more than 24 hours, maybe your baby’s shoulder became lodged and had to be freed by the attendant, or maybe there was some tearing involved. Any additional stress on your body will increase your recovery time and affect how you feel after your baby is born. No one ever wants this to be their delivery process but, unfortunately, it is very common in births. Fortunately, even after a difficult labor and delivery chiropractic care can help offset some of the trauma your body experienced by creating proper movement and stability. Not only does this have a positive effect on your body but has been shown to improve mental health (i.e. Post Partum Depression) that could be a result from a difficult pregnancy or delivery.
Women are often fearful of the birth process because it is one of the most intense events that can occur in your life. Taking care of your body throughout your pregnancy, preparing your pelvis for birth, and understanding how you and chiropractic care work together can make a monumental difference in the outcome of your birth. Luckily, you have just been armed with the knowledge to help you combat any fears and take control of your pregnancy and delivery to turn it into exactly what it was meant to be, a joyful and memorable moment.
